A new family home brought to life with crafted timber

The Tenter Ground residents wanted to convert a dilapidated property which sat empty into a home with clean, open-plan spaces – and what’s more, it needed to be done on a tight budget for the scope of the project.

Located on historic Tenter Ground, the site had a gripping story from the start.

Placed just outside the former walls of the City, the area played an important role in London’s wool trade. It was this wool that would be stretched taught across timber frames – known as ‘tenters’ – to prevent shrinking during the drying process. These timber frames adorned the area and have informed the family home, which now features a series of exposed timber elements, linking its past with its present.

The new elements of the house added around 50% to the internal usable space of the building, maximising the family’s investment while also providing a bespoke and site-specific design. An extensive thermal upgrade package was included in the works, improving the energy efficiency of the building from a rating of E to B.  Working with contractors GESCo, the project took 8 months to complete and was delivered on time and to budget.
